  • What is Writer's Block?
  1. Writer's block is when you can't come up with an idea. You stare at a blank page for hours, typing then deleting. It's when you have no clue what to write about, or what to tell, your brain stops before you even try starting.
  2. Writer's block is when you have tons of ideas, but can't commit to any of them to put them on a page and finish it. It is when you have a mind blowing idea, write a few words/paragraphs/pages/chapters then lose interest yourself. My advice is, you throw those ideas out, or at least shelf them. If it doesn't interest you, it most likely won't interest your readers.
  3. Writer's block is when your stuck at a scene and don't know what to do. You were just on a flow, writing a few thousand words, and then everything crashes down on you and your clueless on what to do. You may still have ideas, but can't seem to find the words for them.

  • What should we do about it?
  1. Turn on music- Sometimes music can be the most inspirational thing in the world to get a writer to write. Try to find music that relates to your scene/novel to get you into it as well. You never know what you'll find.
  2. Brainstorm- Brainstorm some ideas about it. Do the old school "Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?" for a change to get your brain moving.
  3. Go and surf the internet- Sometimes websites can help you write. If you see a photo that reminds you of a character or feeling, it could inspire you to a new level.
  4. Phone a Friend- Call your friend and talk for a while. Then, once you've shared your day, talk to them about your issue. Maybe they have a fabulous idea on what to do about what you are stumped on. Who knows?
  5. Choose not to write- Maybe you need a break. Your brain is about to explode and is all out of ideas. Stop. Take a break. Breathe.
  6. Eat something- Now, I'm not talking, chocolate chips, Doritos, and a milkshake. Just something that can boost your energy: a glass of milk, peanuts, water, granola bar, or even fruit!
  7. Play with your words- Play word association! Pick a word and write about it!
